CAT’S EYE (SHELL) is the common name for the lid or operculum of the common sea snail. When the snail is threatened by a predator or is exposed above the tide, it withdraws into its shell and the operculum seals the opening much like a boat hatch. They are widely used in Europe and the Middle East for protection against the evil eye, no doubt because they themselves resemble eyes. Operculum jewelry, also known as "Cat's Eye" or "Shiva's Eye" was highly prized during the Victorian era, and it's easy to see why. With its shiny surface and unusual swirling blend of dark green, brown and tan, the material simply fascinates. It was also thought to bring luck to the bearer.

The other side of the shell is known as "the eye of Shiva" or the 3rd eye of Shiva and represents development and positive energy, protecting and guarding. The talisman is also known in other cultures as "the Eye of Buddha" in Buddhist Asia, as Mermaid's Money" in southern Africa and as "Eye of Santa Lucia" in Italy.
