African Jasper Large Discs and Copper Necklace
The African Green Jasper lovely puffed discs in this necklace are 20mm . Because of its similarity to turquoise, African Jasper has gained the trade name of "African Turquoise" though it is not Turquoise. Nevertheless, it is a lovely gemstone and much harder than turquoise. I have also used 8mm African Jasper round beads in this design. The copper elements are very attractive. The large beads on each side of the discs are eye catching 16 x 14mm Brushed Copper Trapezoid beads. All are hung on a substantial sized link Copper Curb Link Chain. A brushed Copper handcrafted hook and eye clasp that I made from pure copper wire closes this 23 1/4" necklace. Even though the full length of the necklace is 23 1/4" you can shorten it by placing the hook in any one of the chain's links. They are large enough to fit the hook. So this necklace is adjustable to suit your taste.
COPPER is the oldest known metal, it was associated with the Greek goddess Aphrodite and her Roman counterpart, Venus. The discovery of copper dates from prehistoric times. There are reports of copper beads dating back to 9000BC found in Iraq. Methods for refining copper from its ores were discovered around 5000BC and a 1000 or so years later it was being used in pottery in North Africa
Keeping copper/brass clean and dry, removing any oil or perspiration helps prevent oxidation.. Although it can tarnish over time, copper resists tarnish better than many other jewelry metals (including sterling which turns black). When they do oxidize they take on a soft brown, antiqued color as they darken, a much sought after "vintage" look in jewelry. The tarnish on copper can be easily removed if you prefer a bright look. In addition, Copper jewelry is often considered to have healing properties.
